2. BRITANNIA COMMUNITY KITCHEN

A new community kitchen is coming to Britannia!

Community Kitchen participants come together to cook and eat nutritious meals together and to take meals home to their families. Community kitchens provide a fun and supportive environment to meet new people and try new things and they can also save money on groceries. The Britannia Community Kitchen project will feature diabetic friendly cooking designed to meet the needs of individuals with diabetes or at risk of diabetes. Kitchens will run every two weeks for 11 sessions.

These kitchens are fully subsidized and open to individuals who are struggling financially. Donations are accepted. Registration for childminding is separate. Space is limited.

3. FRESH MILK, FOOD POLITICS EVENT

Fresh Milk, Food Politics (formerly called, Raw Milk Symposium) explores our basic right to healthy food. Presently, officials in the U.S. and Canada maintain that fresh milk is a health hazard, and several provinces ban its sale or purchase. However, there are many dairy experts across North America who argue that, so long as it is produced from grass-fed cows at farms with safe handling practices, the health benefits of fresh milk significantly outweigh those of pasteurized milk. Whether you are a fresh milk advocate or just want to learn more about the issue, this event is an excellent opportunity to speak directly with dairy farmers

6. BC FOOD SYSTEMS NETWORK ANNUAL GATHERING

Please join the BC Food Systems Network as we celebrate 15 years of promoting sustainability and democracy in the BC food system!

The 15th Annual Gathering will be held at George Pringle Memorial Camp in Shawnigan Lake from July 5th through July 7th. Shawnigan Lake is located on Vancouver Island, about forty-five kilometres northwest of Victoria. The theme for this year’s event is “Food from the water, food from the land”. The Network recognizes that food is a human right. It is a gift from the Creator and we must honour the food as well as its sources, whether they be land or water based. Join us as we explore a wide range of issues related to producing and gathering food in British Columbia and explore ways to celebrate and protect our abundant resources.
The Network has a holistic perspective, embracing the way food issues cross cultures, sectors, and age groups. The annual Gathering is one of the ways we share insights, initiatives, strategies and critical analysis of the food system. This year’s Gathering will provide a balance of workshops, presentations and panel discussions with outdoor activities and time for sharing and socializing.

Food and Childhood Allergies and Asthma
In toddlers and children, allergies take many different forms such as sneezing, runny nose, asthma, hives, stomach aches, sleep problems, and behaviour problems. There are many contributing factors. A common factor is sensitivity or intolerance to certain foods. Come learn the underlying process and root causes of allergies, how they are related to food, and what you can do to protect your children. You will walk away with the knowledge and tools to identify and avoid suspect foods, and choose healthy options.

Food and Diabetes
Although genetic factors appear important in susceptibility to diabetes, environmental factors are required to trigger it. Improvements to eating habits and lifestyle have been shown to effectively control diabetes and prevent complications. Come learn how to prevent and cope with diabetes naturally through food and lifestyle choices. Walk away with the knowledge and tools to identify healthy food options and avoid poor foods choices, recipe ideas, meal plans, information on helpful herbs and supplements, and tips on how to improve related lifestyle factors.

Eating for Cardiovascular Health
Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for at least 40% of all deaths in North America. They include atherosclerosis, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and peripheral vascular disease. Dietary and lifestyle factors play a major role in preventing and reversing these and their related complications. Come learn the misunderstood roles of cholesterol and antioxidants in cardiovascular health, the risk factors leading to cardiovascular diseases and how to avoid them, recipe ideas, meal plans, information on helpful foods, herbs, and supplements, and tools to improve lifestyle factors.

Nikoo Boroumand is passionate about health and nutrition. She is a certified nutritional practitioner from the Institute of Holistic Nutrition and also a Chartered Herbalist from Dominion Herbal College.

FOOD SAFE LEVEL 1

FOODSAFE Level 1 is an 8 hour food handling, sanitation and work safety course designed for front line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. The course covers important information including foodborne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing. This course is also useful for the everyday home cooking practices of individuals and families. The course fee includes the workbook, certificate upon successful completion, and refreshments. Eric Schofield works in the areas of education, food studies, and hospitality.

2. ORGANIC ORCHARD CARE

This workshop will cover all the basic skills needed to successfully cultivate perennial fruit in the Pacific Northwest. There will be hands-on lessons in pruning and grafting, and information presented on organic pest and disease control, soil fertility, suitable varieties for our climate, and more!

3. EYA – COMMUNITY HIVE PROGRAM

The EYA is now recruiting for our 2013 “Community Hive” Program that provides intensive training and mentorship in hobby beekeeping for youth (ages 15-30) with instructors Brian Campbell and Alaina Thebault. The curriculum includes: basic natural beekeeping, pest management, habitat creation, honeybee products, and honey extraction. Classes take place at the Strathcona Community Garden’s Eco Pavilion where participants will have access to two working honeybee colonies. 4. GROW YOUR OWN FOOD

Farmers on 57th and Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre present: Grow your Own Food! Come experience the joy of growing your favourite vegetables under the guidance of professional gardeners and educators, Karen Ageson and Tessa Wetherill, who are thrilled to be sharing their passion with you. The learning will be hands-on: you will plan, plant and tend your own garden plot, with instruction and support throughout the growing season. Along the way, you’ll learn about garden planning, soil health, seed starting, transplanting, weeding, watering and organic pest control. You will learn all that is necessary to start, maintain and eat from your own garden.

We will meet 6pm every 2nd Wednesday throughout the season April 3rd to September 4th, 2013. Expect to visit your garden outside of ‘class time’ to water, weed, and harvest your bounty! We encourage you to garden with your family—registration cost is per plot, not per person. One plot per family, please.

5. URBAN FARMER FIELD SCHOOL

The SPEC|YWCA Urban Farmer Field School (UFFS) provides training in sustainable urban agriculture for new and experienced growers. Perched upon the YWCA Metro Vancouver Rooftop Garden, students are engaged in experiential learning opportunities preparing them to be successful urban growers.

6. LITTLE MOUNTAIN HEALTHY COMMUNITIES PROGRAM

Healthy Selves, Healthy Communities: Healthy Living Program for Newcomers
Program addresses topics related to healthy living, wellness, and inter-cultural knowledge exchange. Classes are led by BCIT nurses and include educational lessons, games, and peer based focus groups. Sessions are designed according to need and request of participants, and cover a wide range of health-related topics for people wanting to lead healthier lifestyles. Snacks and bus tickets are included. Participants will receive a certificate and manual at the end of course.

8. TRAIN-THE-TRAINER 2 DAY CANNING WORKSHOP

Grandview Woodland Food Connection - Apricot Canning
This two day workshop is specifically for those who want to teach canning classes in their community. Learn up-to-date safe canning practices as well as theoretical & practical techniques. We will review old & new canning equipment & tools as well as discuss the various canning products & ingredients on the market today. Find out about canning & safe food handling resources available to you. Discuss how to run a canning workshop that best suits your community’s needs. Participants must be willing to participate in one 1-hour teleconference a few months after the workshop.

11. SAFE CANNING BASICS DEMONSTRATION

This one-day session for canning instructors/leaders will review the basics of both boiling water bath (BWB) canning and pressure canning. Learn about old and new canning equipment, tools and current canning products on the market. Get the latest information on safe canning practices. The workshop will consist of a Powerpoint presentation, demonstration and discussion. Due to time limitations, please note that there will be no hands-on component. 2. 2013 FARM INTERN JOB POSTING – RICHMOND SHARING FARM

The Sharing Farm is a non-profit community organization that grows vegetables on donated city lands for the Richmond Food Bank and other community agencies. We are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working farm interns for May – August 2013.

The Sharing Farm is a unique community farm combining the practice of organic farming set within a framework of food justice and food security in the region. The three acre farm is situated within Richmond’s Terra Nova Rural Park, and is also home to Kwantlen University’s Richmond Farm School. Interns will have access to many different workshops, classes, and skill sets, including permaculture, composting, greenhouse cultivation, beekeeping, market gardening, tractor training, fruit tree management, and chicken care. Interns will gain valuable skills in organic farming, machine operation, and running a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program.
The Sharing Farm is located at the west end of Westminster Highway, alongside the West Dyke, in Richmond BC. It is accessible by bus, skytrain, car, or bicycle. It is about a ten minute walk from the nearest bus stop.

2. GROWING CHEFS

Growing Chefs! Chefs for Urban Agriculture, is currently seeking chefs and those with experience growing food to be a part of their 2013 Classroom Gardening and Cooking program. In the Classroom Gardening Program, chef volunteers are paired with elementary school classrooms (grades 1-3) to give students hands-on experience growing and cooking their own food.

The first Growing Chefs class will be the week of April 2nd or April 9th. From then on, volunteers will visit the same classroom every second week until the end of June.

The food program serves healthy and nutritious meals to our program participants and caters for various events that take place within the neighbourhood house. The times for volunteering are flexible and structured within various shifts starting from 7:30am to 2:30pm on any day that you are available Monday to Friday. Immediate training will be provided through orientation, basic food skills, meal preparation, and exposure to various languages and culture. Speaking in English required; Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Spanish or any other second language is an asset.

4. THE FOOD 2 U PROGRAM

The Food 2 U Program is a partnership between the Vancouver Food Bank and Vancouver Coastal Health. The program delivers food to homebound seniors or persons with a disability most Tuesday mornings and is looking for volunteer drivers (with their own car) and passengers. Mileage will be reimbursed for those using their vehicles. Volunteers must be able to work well with people and be physically able to lift 20-25 lb grocery bags. 1. NEIGHBOURHOOD SMALL GRANTS

Neighbourhood Small Grants is Vancouver Foundation’s unique program that helps build community and strengthen connections right where people live - in their neighbourhoods. Our program supports residents like you: residents who have small but powerful ideas to bring people together and make your neighbourhood vibrant.

Our grants range anywhere from $50 to $500 (with two grants of $1000 per neighbourhood) and are designed to help make your project a reality. A community garden, a canning workshop, an intergenerational storytelling project, a street party, and a book exchange - these are just some of hundreds of wonderful resident-driven ideas we fund each year.
We currently operate our Neighbourhood Small Grants in sixteen neighbourhoods, in partnership with other community organizations.

2. THE NEIGHBOURHOOD MATCHING FUND

The Neighbourhood Matching Fund supports neighbourhood-based groups that want to make creative improvements to local public lands. Eligible projects must actively involve the community and build neighbourhood connections. The Neighbourhood Matching Fund is not a grant; community groups are reimbursed for project expenses based on equivalent contributions from volunteer labour, other funding sources, and in-kind donations.
