New First Nations Garden Support Invitation

The GWFC is helping to create a First Nations food and medical plant garden around the new Carving Pavilion at Britannia Community Centre which will have a strong educational component. We would like to convene a couple of visioning sessions as part of the garden planning. We currently have a landscaper/designer, a First Nations herbalist and an artist who can help us with some landscape drawing plans. We are also looking for a few more people to join us.

Environmental Youth Alliance is Seeking Your Support

For the first time in its long history the EYA’s Growing Kids program is asking for the community’s help. Difficult financial realities have put this school mentorship program in serious jeopardy.

Growing Kids is one of Grandview Woodland Food Connection’s most important school garden programs, bringing important garden learning and curriculum to Britannia school and students. In the past four years that we have partnered, we have exposed hundreds of youth to food gardening, opening their minds to new possibilities, knowledge, and understanding that is so critical these days.

EYA is hoping that their crowd funding campaign will be the spark that ignites a new and exciting future for this long under-funded (though incredibly impactful) program.

3. RICHMOND EATS: A LOCAL EATING CHALLENGE


Raise awareness and support food security in your community with the
Richmond Eats: A Local-Eating Challenge

From August 24 to 30, 2015, staff, volunteers and supporters of the Richmond Food Security Society (RFSS) will only eat produce grown on our island, meat raised by our farmers, and seafood caught by local fisherman.*

This challenge will start a conversation about local food and the role it plays in our community and raise much-needed funds for RFSS.

Join us! Become a Foodie and take part in the challenge, make a donation, and join the conversation through Facebook, Twitter, and on the RFSS blog .

RFSS is a community organization committed to building a nutritious, safe, secure, and affordable food system through education, skills development, research, and policy change. To learn more about projects we are working on, visit http://www.richmondfoodsecurity.org.

After a successful turn out last year for the Spiritual Ecologies and New Cosmologies Convergence, the newly formed Salish Sea Spiritual Ecology Alliance (SSSEA), based in Vancouver, BC, is planning its second Convergence. Planned as a series of four workshop sessions, this year’s Convergence, entitled “Place-Based Activism and Spiritual Practice”, will take participants on a pilgrimage through the domains of Ocean, Forest, Farm and City.

Exploring our relationship to each of these places, the aim of the convergence is to understand what it means to be an activist or a connected human being in each of these spaces. Realistically, how do we understand and improve the current state of our city and all of its diverse landscapes?

Whether you consider yourself an activist, or are simply seeking to engage in meaningful action, the Sacred Activism and Spiritual Practice Convergence will be a month of kindling the fires of change within us, and grounding them so that they do not burn out.

7. SUSTENANCE FESTIVAL 2015

We are pleased to announce that the Grandview Woodland Food Connection will be participating in the 2015 Sustenance Festival. Now in its 7th year, is an annual city-wide Vancouver Park Board festival with food-inspired workshops, exhibitions, talks, walks, dances all taking place in community centres, gardens, parks, and public spaces throughout Vancouver.

The Sustenance Festival provides opportunities for learning, sharing, and celebrating food from growing to eating, cooking, preserving, foraging, composting, photographing, painting, weaving, to more! To explore the art and culture of food and to build connections in community.

8. NUTRITION COUNSELING SERVICE

Nutrition counseling services by a certified holistic nutritionist and herbalist will be available for under-served residents and open to all community members on a sliding scale basis. This service is aimed at helping you navigate the food choices available in our area and choose the foods that are best suited for your health, taking into consideration any health issues or goals you may have. Improved eating habits can help boost your physical and mental health. This service also aims to help connect residents to affordable, accessible, healthy food programs and options. Service available Tuesdays 6-9pm.

This hands-on workshop is intended for all canning enthusiasts who want to learn the most current methods for safe, enjoyable home canning. The workshop includes a complete demonstration of the boiling-water-bath method of canning, as well as a discussion of pressure canning. Irrigation Systems

The Vancouver Urban Farming Society is excited to announce an upcoming workshop on the basics of irrigation systems, as part of our Farmer-In-Training workshop series. This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about different irrigation systems (overhead sprinklers, drip irrigation), how to design a system, and what information is needed before starting out.
The workshop, facilitated by Gray Orion, will take place at UBC Farm, and will include a chance to walk around and look at the different irrigation systems being used.

Job Description

Guided by Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Food Philosophy, the Community Food Initiatives Manager is responsible for developing and delivering methods of promoting a resilient food system in the West End of Vancouver. This role entails management of Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Community food programs, initiatives and events. It will also play a leadership role in the development of a West End Community Food Centre (include assisting with the securing of a West End program location.

The Community Food Initiatives Manager will be responsible for leading Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Urban Farming program, and will seek to engage members of our community in farming initiatives via workshops, demonstrations and community engagement activities.

The Community Food Initiatives Manager will be responsible for engaging the community, program partners in a discourse on issues pertaining to food access and resilient food systems.

The Community Food Initiatives Manager will serve on the Planning Team, the Fundraising Committee, Food-raising team and on any other committees as designated by the Executive Director. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: writing grant applications, ensuring that existing grant obligations are met and reported on and soliciting in-kind donations.

Compensation: $24.92/hour + benefits (ANHBC Band 9)

Schedule: TBD with Program Director/Executive Director, but is based on 30 hours/week (each work day includes a one-hour unpaid lunch). Up to 5 additional hours per week may be made available through additional grants.

Reports to: Program Director and Executive Director

Direct Reports: Farmer/Community Programmer, Chef/Food Enthusiast, Community Programmer (Food Initiatives), food initiative related placement students and volunteers.

Qualifications

0 5+ years experience in a program coordination role in social services or community food security program setting. 2+ years in a leadership role.
0 Relevant university education– ideally a minimum of an undergraduate degree, though equivalent work experience will be considered
0 Demonstrated program planning and evaluation experience
0 Experience supervising staff and volunteers
0 Strong knowledge of food and poverty issues, and demonstrated commitment to social justice
0 Experience working in low-income and marginalized communities
0 Direct experience in one or more of the following areas: fundraising, human resources, community consultation, leadership development and project management.
0 Culinary and horticultural interests/skills are an asset
0 Comfortable working with Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Hootsuite and Microsoft Office programs (excel, word, power point)
0 Ability to work independently and demonstrate good judgment
0 Knowledge of West End resources or willingness to learn
0 Strong written and oral communication skills in English
0 Comfort interacting and working with a richly diverse group of program participants, volunteer base and staff
0 A great sense of humour and an appreciation for music are considered assets

2. GRANDVIEW WOODLAND FOOD CONNECTION


The Grandview Woodlands Food Connection is a grassroots food security group supporting residents to access healthy and affordable food. We are developing a number of community based food initiatives, including community gardening, bulk buying groups, school gardens, canning workshops,community kitchens and more.

We are currently seeking community members interested in helping us with our Off the Grill youth meal program (chef mentor), media, graphic design, Wordpress web support, Advisory Committee, gardeners, and fundraising event organization. 3. INTERGENERATIONAL LANDED LEARNING PROJECT


Volunteer with Children at UBC Farm! Be a Farm Friend with the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project!

Farm Friend volunteers work in intergenerational teams of one elder, one younger adult, and 3-5 elementary school children to sow, tend harvest, prepare, and eat healthy food crops at the UBC Farm. Farm Friends commit 13 Wednesday or Thursday mornings (8:30am-1pm), every other week throughout the 2015-16 school year. On-call volunteers are also sought. 4. VANCOUVER FRUIT TREE PROJECT

Pick leaders

What is a Pick Leader?
“Pick Leaders” help volunteers get the fruit from the tree to the charity! They arrange equipment and transportation details (with MODO car co-op, your own vehicle, or by bike), and lead a safe and fun pick with volunteers. Then they deliver the fruit to the community partner.

Why become a Pick Leader?
Help contribute to food security and make a difference in your community. This position is at the heart of the Fruit Tree Project, without Pick Leaders we couldn’t do it. Gain the deep satisfaction of diverting food from waste to those who need it. It’s also an amazing opportunity to lead a team, pick up some skills, meet great people and eat fresh fruit while you do it!

What is expected of me?
Pick Leaders are asked to commit to 4-5 picks per season. The season is July-October.

How does it work?
After a training and orientation session, you will receive emails from the coordinator with details about upcoming picks that are in need of a Pick Leader. Simply email back when you can lead a pick, so you can make it suit your schedule.
