7. LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE
LFHW-logo

The food waste problem
Households in the Metro Vancouver region generate about 190,000 tonnes of food waste every year. Over half of that, just over 100,000 tonnes, is food, liquid and dairy waste that could have been consumed. Reducing that waste is key to meeting Metro Vancouver’s waste diversion targets as well as our goal of a 10 per cent reduction in per capita waste by 2020.

Food waste adds about $700 a year to each household’s grocery bill, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Costs not factored into our research include inputs like the water, electricity, fertilizer, soil degradation and labour to produce the food as well as the fuel to transport that food to global markets.

Funding

1. NEIGHBOURHOOD SMALL GRANTS

Have a great idea for a community project?

Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG) is a unique program funded by the Vancouver Foundation that helps build community and strengthen connections right where people live – in their neighbourhoods. This program supports residents like you: residents who have small but powerful ideas to bring people together and make your neighbourhood vibrant.

There are Neighbourhood Small Grants and Greenest City Grants both offering grants between $50 and $500 (and occasionally $1000). Both grants are designed to help make your project a reality. A community garden, a canning workshop, an intergenerational storytelling project, a street party, and a book exchange – these are just some of the amazing things you can apply for.

The purpose behind NSG is to stimulate creativity, encourage local solutions, build connections between neighbours, and engage people from all backgrounds and circumstances in the life of their community.

This grant offers $50 to $500 (up to $1,000 if if projects meet and go beyond NSG objectives and goals. The 2016 Neighbourhood Small Grants / Greenest City Grants program launch and online application opens on February 15, 2016. Deadline for submissions in April 4, 2016.

2. HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAM COMMUNITY GRANT

Vancouver Coastal Health, Healthy Living Program (HLP) is pleased to announce grant funding to support community projects in Vancouver.

Annually, the HLP provides grant funding to Vancouver community grassroots organizations for projects that address health promotion, healthy living and chronic disease prevention. Projects must focus on one or more of the following: mitigating chronic disease risk factors, healthy eating, active living and tobacco reduction. Projects must address target groups that the HLP serves, specifically adults from one of the following groups: high risk ethno-cultural groups, Aboriginal populations and those impacted by the social determinants of health.

Healthy Living Program grants of up to $4,000 are now available for the 2016 funding cycle.

Funding is intended for new projects that are time limited such as:
• An initiative that brings people together to participate in healthy-living focused activity.
• New programs with a health or chronic disease prevention focus such as health education sessions, walking groups/clubs, cooking class/clubs, tobacco reduction.

Funding is not intended for a one-time event, the purchase of snacks for an existing program or for the purchase of start up equipment.

Who can apply for funding?
The Healthy Living Program grant is for Vancouver community grassroots organizations, non-profits and community groups.

Reporting requirements: Programs will be asked to share materials and resources that they have developed through their project. A mid-point and final report will be required as well as your participation in the biannual HLP Showcase Event. HLP Staff will be available to meet with you to answer questions and provide feedback for the ongoing improvement of the operation of the project.

What are the reviewers looking when assessing your grant application?

• Does it include a viable plan for ensuring sustainability of resources such as training materials and trained staff. Is there potential for future policy development?
• Does it reflect the guiding principles of the Healthy Living Program as outlined in our program’s Frequently Asked Questions at the end of this document?
• Are there specific activities for participants to increase their participation in healthy eating, active living, and /or tobacco reduction activities such as skill building/goal setting and action planning?
• Does it reach at least 50 people from a Healthy Living Program target group such as individuals who are from high risk ethno-cultural groups, Aboriginal populations, culturally diverse populations or people impacted by low income and other social determinants of health?
• Does it provide education to staff? Will people working within your organization learn healthy living principles?
• Is health information delivered by health professionals or trained NGO staff? (e.g. Canadian Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation)
• Does it affect change quickly and lead to measurable benefits within a year?
• Is it accessible (e.g. in terms of language, affordability, childcare and transportation)?
• Are staff assigned to and is support included for the evaluation and reporting requirements?
• Does it demonstrate a recruitment strategy plan?
• Community leaders are engaged and included in the project plan.
• Does it contain an evaluation plan?
• Is there evidence of Community Capacity Building that is sustainable? (ie. will the community sense ownership by the end of the project?)

Please note: Organizations who have received a Healthy Living Program grant in the last 12 months are not eligible to apply for the 2016 funding stream.

A maximum of up to one grant will be awarded per Vancouver Coastal Health Community Health Area (CHA) in Vancouver e.g. CHA 1 to CHA 6. Please refer to the map contained at the end of this document.

Submission deadline for the 2016 funding stream application:
Thursday March 31, 2016
email: Corinne.Eisler@vch.ca

3. AGRICULTURAL AWARENESS GRANTS

Metro Vancouver supports agriculture awareness by providing funding grants to community organizations to educate the public about local food production. Grants are open to any non-profit organization meeting the eligibility criteria. The next grant application process begins in January 2016 and applications are due by March 7, 2016.

Grant recipients and projects
In 2016 Metro Vancouver is providing a total of $40,000 in funding grants to non-profit organizations to help promote agriculture awareness throughout the region. Last year, 11 grants were awarded ranging in value from $500 to $5,000. Since 2008, Metro Vancouver has awarded 63 grants, totaling $270,000.

4. COMMUNITY SMALL GRANTS - HASTINGS SUNRISE

$500 – $1500

What is the Hastings North Community Partners Group (HNCPG)? The HNCPG is a group of community agencies that came together in the fall of 2008 with a joint vision of collaboratively building a welcoming and inclusive community in our Hastings North area. The HNCPG manages the Community Small Grants project (CSG), which is funded by the City of Vancouver through the Hastings Legacy Fund.

What is the difference between Community Small Grants (CSG) and Neighbourhood Small Grants? There are many similarities, however, CSG have different physical boundaries; focus on bringing the broader community together; and projects and events are eligible for a higher amount of funding. Both applicants must be individuals (not businesses or Societies) who live within the area of Boundary Road to Victoria Drive, and 1st Avenue North to the waterfront. Your proposed project/event must also take place within these boundaries. Not all applicants will receive a grant.
