2. BRITANNIA BULK BUYING


Are you interested in fresh fruits and veggies? Do you want to save money? The Britannia Bulk Buying Group purchases fresh produce at wholesale prices saving you about 30% on your food bill. Food is bought once a month and brought to Britannia Community Centre to sort and pick up. Cost is $13 for about 7- 8 varieties of food. That is two bags of food. This program is for individuals and households who are struggling financially.

To honour local women who have made significant contributions to arts, culture, sports, and community in Vancouver, the Vancouver Park Board has established the Remarkable Women poster series. Each year, the individual stories of a select group of women from diverse backgrounds and abilities are featured on posters, which highlight the important roles each woman plays in our communities. We all have questions when it comes to food safety. What should we be concerned with when handling food in our kitchens? What’s safe and what isn’t in our day-to-day work in the kitchen? Come learn the basics about safe food handling in a friendly classroom environment. This is a
provincially recognized course taught by qualified instructors. It is suitable for individuals who have a grade 8 or higher reading comprehension level.

4. SAFE CANNING BASICS DEMONSTRATION

This one-day session for canning instructors/leaders will review the basics of both boiling water bath (BWB) canning and pressure canning. Learn about old and new canning equipment, tools and current canning products on the market. Get the latest information on safe canning practices. The workshop will consist of a Powerpoint presentation, demonstration and discussion. Due to time limitations, please note that there will be no hands-on component. 5. FIRST AID & FIRE SAFETY FOR COMMUNITY KITCHENS

By request, we are offering our 1-day workshop for community kitchen (CK) leaders & participants on First Aid and Fire Safety. Vancouver Fire Fighters will facilitate “Save Somebody’s Life” & afterwards Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services will come & offer “Fire Safety & Fire Extinguisher Training”. Participants must attend both components for the day.

Save Somebody’s Life in the Kitchen.
How can you prevent accidents in the kitchen? Do you know what steps to take if a CK participant is choking? In this workshop you will gain knowledge & basic first aid skills needed in the first few minutes following an emergency in the kitchen. This course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn basic life saving skills, but does not require formal ‘certification’. Training focuses on the basic skills needed in the first few minutes following an emergency, provides advice on when to seek medical attention & includes practice scenarios.

Topics covered: • Burns • Knife Cuts • CPR • Choking
Fire Safety & Fire Extinguisher Training. Do you know what to do if there is a fire in the kitchen? Wondering how to use a fire extinguisher? This course is intended to give community kitchen leaders a basic understanding of fire safety & the use & limitations of portable fire-fighting equipment. It includes training on live fires using “Hands-On” Fire Extinguisher Training. Part of the course takes place outside & it is recommended that course participants wear comfortable, casual clothes appropriate to the weather conditions on the day.

The Grandview Woodland Food Connection, Eastside Family Place and Slow Food are pleased to present a special film screening in support of the new garden twinning project between the Britannia School Food Garden and the Slow Food Thousand Gardens in Africa Project.

Film: To Make a Farm (2012) is a beautifully photographed documentary exploring of the lives of five young people who have decided to become small-scale farmers. The Man Who Stopped the Desert (2010) tells the story of Yacouba Sawadogo, an African peasant farmer who has transformed the lives of thousands of people across the Sahel.

6. CREATE A NEW COMMUNITY GARDEN?

Are you interested in starting a new community garden or orchard?
Community gardens are recognized as important neighbourhood gathering places that promote neighbourhood livability, urban greening, community building, crime reduction, exercise and food production. Community gardens are powerful tools to achieve multiple social, environmental and economic benefits.

The City of Vancouver is asking residents to send in expressions of interest to create new community garden and orchard sites. Sites for community gardens could be vacant land at the end of a block, land parallel to streets, areas of parks, etc. The list of sites will help prioritize community garden support for 2013.

Spicy Kimchi

It’s spicy, tart and rated one of the world’s healthiest foods by Health magazine in 2008. Kimchi’s probiotic bacteria (lactobacilli) are good for both your gastrointestinal and immune systems and adds a tasty kick to a variety of meals. Led by www.culinaryadventures.co founder Gloria Chang who learned to make kimchi from her Korean mother, this hands-on workshop will teach you how to make your own Baechu Kimchi (napa cabbage) to ferment at home and a fresh Kimchi salad to eat with your next few meals. You’ll take both home in two jars. No experience necessary!

Saving Seeds

As the warm summer sun ripens bountiful fruits, it is time to start saving seeds for the next year. In this interactive workshop, you will learn what traits to look for when saving seeds, the effects of hybridization and cross-pollination on seed saving and different techniques for harvesting seeds. Each participant will get to take home a package of seeds freshly harvested during the workshop.

She currently guides homeowners through the process of designing, building, and maintaining the organic garden of their dreams.

8. CANNING DEMONSTRATION & HANDS-ON JAM MAKING: FOR ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY LEADERS (Sponsored by AHIP – Aboriginal Health Initiative Program)

This class consists of a presentation on up-to-date safe canning practices and techniques; question and answer discussion; and demonstrations of boiling water bath canning and pressure canning. Participants will also receive hands-on experience with boiling water bath canning by making jam together. All participants will receive: boiling water bath canner with flat rack, pressure canner, Bernardin canning toolkit, Bernardin canning recipe book and cloth bag. 10. FIRST AID & FIRE SAFETY FOR COMMUNITY KITCHENS

By request, we are offering our 1-day workshop for community kitchen (CK) leaders & participants on First Aid and Fire Safety. Vancouver Fire Fighters will facilitate “Save Somebody’s Life” & afterwards Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services will come & offer “Fire Safety & Fire Extinguisher Training”. Participants must attend both components for the day.
Save Somebody’s Life in the Kitchen.
How can you prevent accidents in the kitchen? Do you know what steps to take if a CK participant is choking? In this workshop you will gain knowledge & basic first aid skills needed in the first few minutes following an emergency in the kitchen. This course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn basic life saving skills, but does not require formal ‘certification’. Training focuses on the basic skills needed in the first few minutes following an emergency, provides advice on when to seek medical attention & includes practice scenarios.
Topics covered: • Burns • Knife Cuts • CPR • Choking
Fire Safety & Fire Extinguisher Training. Do you know what to do if there is a fire in the kitchen? Wondering how to use a fire extinguisher? This course is intended to give community kitchen leaders a basic understanding of fire safety & the use & limitations of portable fire-fighting equipment. It includes training on live fires using “Hands-On” Fire Extinguisher Training. Part of the course takes place outside & it is recommended that course participants wear comfortable, casual clothes appropriate to the weather conditions on the day.

You’ve heard about a grant for which you want to apply.  What do you include in a successful grant proposal for your community kitchen?   What information are funders looking for?   Here’s a chance for a Q&A on grant-writing with some hands-on experience working through a grant application in small groups….just in time for Vancouver Foundation’s January 2013 grant deadlines!

This workshop is specifically for those who run community kitchens or other community-based cooking or nutritional skill building programs.

13. EVERGREEN URBAN ORCHARD WORKSHOPS

Join Evergreen at the Urban Orchard to learn about growing fruit trees in the city! These four workshops will provide you with the knowledge you need to successfully grow fruit trees on any scale – whether in your backyard or at an urban farm. All of the workshops will be taught by Dr. Kent Mullinix, Director of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security for the Institute of Sustainable Horticulture at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Each workshop will combine classroom learning with hands on experience in the Great Northern Way Urban Orchard. Refreshments will be provided.

1. GRANDVIEW WOODLAND FOOD CONNECTION

The Grandview Woodlands Food Connection is a grassroots food security group supporting residents to access healthy and affordable food. We are developing a number of community based food initiatives, including community gardening, bulk buying groups, school gardens, canning workshops,community kitchens and more and are looking for individuals interested in hands-on project coordination. 2. KIWASSA NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE’S FOOD PROGRAM

We are looking for volunteers to assist in food preparation, cooking and serving as well as cleaning and organizing the kitchen and other tasks as necessary. The food program serves healthy and nutritious meals to our program participants and caters for various events that take place within the neighbourhood house. Upon completion of three months of commitment, additional training may be provided (Food Safe training, resume writing, interview skills etc). Immediate training will be provided through orientation, basic food skills, meal preparation, and exposure to various languages and culture.

3. NOW BC

We are now in the peak of harvest season and CSA boxes and orders are getting large with bulk veggies and fruit! We are seeking volunteer helpers for the next month or two! Please come on out and help!
VOLUNTEER DRIVERS
We are looking for helpers with cars who can deliver bins of organic food to a couple locations! Do you:
have a car (any size)
have 2-3 hrs to share Wed or Thur afternoon(s)
have an interest in playing a hands on role in getting food from our local organic farmers out to the people?
We need your help! We’ll fill your car up with bins of local organic goodness and send you out to one or two locations to drop food off for folks.
VOLUNTEER ORDER PACKERS
We are looking for helpers to pack food orders for NOWBC’s on-line farmers market on THURSDAYS from 9am to noon. Enjoy hands on work with volumes of organic fruits and veggies? Happy lifting cartons of peaches? Revel in labeling 100 bins of local organic food going out to fill dinner tables? Come on out and help! Our food packing warehouse is located in East Van a few blocks north of Clark and 1st. Email joannam@nowbc.ca to let us know if you would like to help!

4. VANCOUVER FRUIT TREE PROJECT

Volunteer fruit pickers and pick leaders are needed to harvest extra fruit from backyard fruit trees and redistribute it to community groups. In the past 12 years we have picked more than 35, 000 pounds of fruit and redistributed it to community centres, neighbourhood houses, daycares and other community groups. Reduce food waste, feed people in your community, and strengthen Vancouver food security. A range of fun volunteer positions are available.

TREEHOUSE TREATS
Is the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project’s new social enterprise. A portion of our fruit picked is made into fruit galettes and sold at farmer’s markets.
