1. VANCOUVER TREE WEEK FILM SCREENING

Britannia Community Centre, CFEC Room, 1655 William (Above Eastside Family Place)
Monday, April 4, 7pm

http://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/eastside-tree-night-april-4-2016.aspx

Watch the 1987 Oscar-winning animated short, “The Man Who Planted Trees” written by Jean Giono after WWI, tells story of one shepherd’s long and successful singlehanded effort to re-forest a desolate valley, presented by Vancouver Film School classical animation instructor Keith Blackmore.

Keith Blackmore, Vancouver Film School instructor & film historian will present the film and discuss how it relates to our own neighbourhood and personal initiatives.Since 1995 Keith Blackmore has been an instructor of Classical Animation, 3D Animation & VFX at the Vancouver Film School. As a member of the SPARK CG Society and the Vancouver SIGGRAPH chapter he has been the Conference Chairman for several animation and VFX festivals in Vancouver. As an animation historian Keith has also been a guest lecturer at ECUAD, Science World and the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival.

Hear arborist David Tracey, executive director of Tree City, talk about our human relationship with trees. Our primate ancestors knew trees intimately as their homes, protectors and providers. We climbed down to evolve as humans but in many ways we never left. Trees are still found at the heart of religion, myth, science and story.

Learn about gardening opportunities to get involved with gardening initiatives in your neighbourhood through the work of the Grandview Garden Club!

10. VANCOUVER FOOD SUMMIT

We would like to invite you to join us and other neighbourhood house staff, community food leaders, activists, thought leaders, funders and policy folks for the 1st Annual Vancouver Food Summit on May 19th, 2016 at Gordon Neighbourhood House (Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks Included). Please find the invitation attached to this email and find the Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/907860999312852/912644335501185/

The Vancouver Food Summit is an opportunity for community food practitioners and stakeholders to spend a day sharing experience and expertise, challenging assumptions, having difficult conversations and exploring how to deepen our collective impact. As we gather to do this work we acknowledge that we are on the unceded, occupied, ancestral and traditional lands of the Musqueam, Skxwú7mesh, and Tsleil-Waututh nations. We also remember the historical and ongoing colonial genocide against Indigenous peoples that make it possible for us to be here as settlers.

The sessions to choose are still being confirmed, but they are likely to explore topics ranging from:

– Is Local Food Inherently More Just?
– Indigenous Food Sovereignty
– Food Waste: an Opportunity or Albatross?
– How do we Ensure that Community Food Programs are Accessible to People with Disabilities (in Partnership with Disability Alliance BC)?
– Are rights based arguments (Food, Housing etc..) effective?
– Hunger: Is Food Policy a solution?
– Do Food Banks stay the same, evolve or do we aim to close them?

Keynote by: Diana Bronson (Food Secure Canada, Executive Director) http://foodsecurecanada.org/

Attendees can stay for Happy Hour after the Summit from 4:00PM to 6:00PM. Snacks, Craft Beer ($5) and delicious snacks will available. GNH’s resident DJ (DJ Teyshan) will be on hand to make Happy Hour that much more fun. See you there!

Tickets to the Vancouver Food Summit can be purchased for $60 at: http://vancouverfoodsummit.bpt.me

12. SALTY BRINE FERMENTATION FAIR

13. LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE
The food waste problem
Households in the Metro Vancouver region generate about 190,000 tonnes of food waste every year. Over half of that, just over 100,000 tonnes, is food, liquid and dairy waste that could have been consumed. Reducing that waste is key to meeting Metro Vancouver’s waste diversion targets as well as our goal of a 10 per cent reduction in per capita waste by 2020.

Food waste adds about $700 a year to each household’s grocery bill, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Costs not factored into our research include inputs like the water, electricity, fertilizer, soil degradation and labour to produce the food as well as the fuel to transport that food to global markets.

For more information on how you can help reduce food waste visit: http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.ca/
