2. NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING SERVICE

Nutrition counseling services by a certified holistic nutritionist and herbalist will be available for under-served residents and open to all community members on a sliding scale basis. This service is aimed at helping you navigate the food choices available in our area and choose the foods that are best suited for your health, taking into consideration any health issues or goals you may have. Improved eating habits can help boost your physical and mental health. This service also aims to help connect residents to affordable, accessible, healthy food programs and options. Service available Tuesdays 6-9pm.

5. LIVING WILD

Daniella Roze has taken living simpler, a few steps further than most of us. The W.L Seaton graduate, has found a way of living off the land in a wilderness experiment she undertakes for a month at a time over a period of several years. She and a group of friends spent one month living in the mountains with only the buckskin clothing and tools they made, and eating completely wild foods.

6. VANCOUVER YOUTH FOOD POLICY COUNCIL

What is it, you may ask? We are looking for youth (anyone under age 25) to take part in developing a Vancouver Youth Food Policy Council! We are hosting a brainstorm session in either late March or early April and would love for you to join us. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the community on sharing knowledge and experiences and identifying ways together on how to build a resilient and accessible food system for EVERYONE.

Hunger in Canada is a significant issue. Which is why it’s so critical to dedicate a week to talk about it and work together to make a change. Hunger Awareness Week, May 5-9, 2014 is a week for communities and individuals across Canada to take action in reducing hunger. The mission of Hunger Awareness Week is to tell the story of Food Banks and the poepl held by them. The goal of Hunger Awareness Day (May 9) is to raise awareness about the solvable problem of Hunger in Canada.

Eightfold Eats: Gluten Free, Sugar Free & Vegan Baking

This workshop includes a baking demo on how to bake gluten free, vegan and without white or simple sugars; a discussion on dairy and superfoods and the truth about all alternative sweeteners plus much more. You will also get great tips on cooking, handouts, FOOD, exclusive recipes and a question period near the end to ask questions and queries.

3. SPEC URBAN FARMER FIELD SCHOOL

It is with great excitement that we launch our 2014 season which is dishing out 23 classes from March 13 – October 18th!!! From Seeding 101, to Solar Greenhouses to Urban Foraging…we have bushels of classes to feed your appetite.

What is UFFS?
The Urban Farmer Field School (UFFS) offers hands-on training in sustainable urban agriculture for new and experienced growers. We believe that small classes, great instructors and hands-on experiences make for spontaneous learning opportunities. In its first 2 years of classes UFFS:
- hosted over 330 participants;
- served up over 40 classes related to growing, prepping, eating and recycling local food;
- offered paid teaching gigs to over 20 local urban farmers and food experts; and,
- provided over 150 hours of food education to Vancouver’s budding food growers!

This 1-day workshop for community kitchen (CK) leaders & participants consists of 2 components. Pacific First Aid will provide a general overview of first aid for common kitchen injuries & afterwards Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services will come & offer “Fire Safety & Fire Extinguisher Training”. Community Kitchen Leadership

Foodsafe Level One

Come learn the basics about safe food handling in a friendly classroom environment. This is a provincially recognized course taught by qualified instructors. It is suitable for individuals who have a grade 8 or higher reading comprehension level. The exam is available in other languages, please call for more info. Train the trainer Canning Workshop

This two day workshop is specifically for those who want to teach canning classes in their community. Learn up-to-date safe canning practices as well as theoretical & practical techniques. We will review old & new canning equipment & tools as well as discuss the various canning products & ingredients on the market today. Find out about canning & safe food handling resources available to you. Discuss how to run a canning workshop that best suits your community’s needs. 1. THE SHARING FARM 2014 FARM INTERN

Background
 
The Sharing Farm is a non-profit community organization that grows vegetables on donated city lands for the Richmond Food Bank and other community agencies. We are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working farm interns for May – August 2014.

The Sharing Farm is a unique community farm combining the practice of organic farming set within a framework of food justice and food security in the region. The three acre farm is situated within Richmond’s Terra Nova Rural Park, and is also home to Kwantlen University’s Richmond Farm School.

Interns will have access to many different workshops, classes, and skill sets, including permaculture, composting, greenhouse cultivation, beekeeping, market gardening and more. Interns will gain valuable skills in organic farming, and running a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program.

The Sharing Farm is located at the west end of Westminster Highway, alongside the West Dyke, in Richmond BC. It is accessible by bus, skytrain, car, or bicycle. It is about a ten minute walk from the nearest bus stop.
