This service is aimed at helping you navigate the food choices available in our area and choose the foods that are best suited for your health, taking into consideration any health issues or goals you may have. Improved eating habits can help boost your physical and mental health. This service also aims to help connect residents to affordable, accessible, healthy food programs and options. Service available Tuesdays 6-9pm.

Fermented vegetables are packed with probiotics that are required for good digestion, a strong immune system, and all around great health. Fermenting vegetables allows the nutrients in the vegetables to become more available for our bodies to absorb. The micro-organisms that take part in the fermentation process also increase nutrients, notably B vitamins. Come learn how to make this easy and affordable health food using resources you have around the house. Food isn’t just what we eat. Eating is only one part of a vast global system that grows, processes, packages, markets, and ultimately discards food. Regrettably, today’s industrial food system is failing not only our communities, but also our environment and our bodies. But there is an alternative recipe for food—a sustainable one—that promises to bring food and agriculture back into our communities so that they’re more vibrant, vital, and healthy for everyone.
Drawing from leading food system practitioners and best practices from across North America, we will explore a broad scope of community food system opportunities, including land use planning, urban design strategies, bringing food into land and economic development efforts, and successful grassroots initiatives.
Emphasizing implementation, we will explore topics such as how to get local decision-makers on board and using social media and other communication techniques effectively. You’ll learn through presentations, panels involving a range of guest speakers, and large- and small-group discussion and activities so you and others in the course can consider the role of food in your communities, organizations, and sustainability efforts.This is an essential course for mid-career professionals in the emerging field of community food systems—the next “big thing” in sustainability. 1. GRANDVIEW WOODLAND FOOD CONNECTION
The Grandview Woodland Food Connection is a grassroots food security group supporting residents to access healthy and affordable food. We are developing a number of community based food initiatives, including community gardening, bulk buying groups, school gardens, canning workshops, community kitchens and more and are looking for individuals interested in hands-on project coordination. 2. THE FOOD 2 U PROGRAMThe Food 2 U Program is a partnership between the Vancouver Food Bank and Vancouver Coastal Health. The program delivers food to homebound seniors or persons with a disability most Tuesday mornings and is looking for volunteer drivers (with their own car) and passengers. Mileage will be reimbursed for those using their vehicles. Volunteers must be able to work well with people and be physically able to lift 20-25 lb grocery bags. Familiarity with the downtown area is an asset. For further information, please contact Jan Russell at 604-301-3886.

1. SEASONS OF FOOD COORDINATOR
The Coordinator is responsible for organizing and promoting the Seasons of Food Garden and Cooking Workshops at Hastings Community Centre.
Responsibilities
-Organizing an estimated 30 workshops per year that meet the cultural, ethnic and socio-economic needs of the community
-Liaising with Workshop Coordinators and continuing to secure new facilitators based on feedback from participants and the community
-Identifying and soliciting additional funding through grant applications, donations, fundraising and partnerships
-Managing a budget
-Promoting programs and events. Manage social media, e-newsletters via MailChimp. Provide workshop descriptions for the HCC Program brochures
-Administering participant and workshop facilitator surveys
-Providing oversight for the Hastings Community Learning Garden workshops, activities and contractor(s)
Qualifications and Skills
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and good computer knowledge
-Knowledge and interest in food security and the community capacity building approach
-Proven ability to work independently, conduct outreach, facilitate groups, supervise volunteers, organize and manage projects
-Cross cultural communication, understanding and experience
-Knowledge of the Hastings Sunrise community
-Record keeping and administrative experience
-Program development skills
Hours per week: 4-8 hours per week depending on funding.
Compensation: $25/hour
