The Grandview Woodland Food Connection, Eastside Family Place and Slow Food are pleased to present a special film screening in support of the new garden twinning project between the Britannia School Food Garden and the Slow Food Thousand Gardens in Africa Project.
Film: To Make a Farm (2012) is a beautifully photographed documentary exploring of the lives of five young people who have decided to become small-scale farmers. The Man Who Stopped the Desert (2010) tells the story of Yacouba Sawadogo, an African peasant farmer who has transformed the lives of thousands of people across the Sahel.

Are you interested in starting a new community garden or orchard?
Community gardens are recognized as important neighbourhood gathering places that promote neighbourhood livability, urban greening, community building, crime reduction, exercise and food production. Community gardens are powerful tools to achieve multiple social, environmental and economic benefits.
The City of Vancouver is asking residents to send in expressions of interest to create new community garden and orchard sites. Sites for community gardens could be vacant land at the end of a block, land parallel to streets, areas of parks, etc. The list of sites will help prioritize community garden support for 2013.

Spicy Kimchi
It’s spicy, tart and rated one of the world’s healthiest foods by Health magazine in 2008. Kimchi’s probiotic bacteria (lactobacilli) are good for both your gastrointestinal and immune systems and adds a tasty kick to a variety of meals. Led by www.culinaryadventures.co founder Gloria Chang who learned to make kimchi from her Korean mother, this hands-on workshop will teach you how to make your own Baechu Kimchi (napa cabbage) to ferment at home and a fresh Kimchi salad to eat with your next few meals. Saving Seeds
As the warm summer sun ripens bountiful fruits, it is time to start saving seeds for the next year. In this interactive workshop, you will learn what traits to look for when saving seeds, the effects of hybridization and cross-pollination on seed saving and different techniques for harvesting seeds. Each participant will get to take home a package of seeds freshly harvested during the workshop.

Her work with many community projects including Farmers on 57th, the Landed Learning Project at the UBC Farm, and the residential garden at the George Pearson Centre, have given her the opportunity to unite elements of landscaping and permaculture design into urban gardens. She currently guides homeowners through the process of designing, building, and maintaining the organic garden of their dreams.

8. CANNING DEMONSTRATION & HANDS-ON JAM MAKING: FOR ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY LEADERS (Sponsored by AHIP – Aboriginal Health Initiative Program)
This class consists of a presentation on up-to-date safe canning practices and techniques; question and answer discussion; and demonstrations of boiling water bath canning and pressure canning. Participants will also receive hands-on experience with boiling water bath canning by making jam together. All participants will receive: boiling water bath canner with flat rack, pressure canner, Bernardin canning toolkit, Bernardin canning recipe book and cloth bag. 10. FIRST AID & FIRE SAFETY FOR COMMUNITY KITCHENS
By request, we are offering our 1-day workshop for community kitchen (CK) leaders & participants on First Aid and Fire Safety. Vancouver Fire Fighters will facilitate “Save Somebody’s Life” & afterwards Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services will come & offer “Fire Safety & Fire Extinguisher Training”. Participants must attend both components for the day.
Save Somebody’s Life in the Kitchen.
How can you prevent accidents in the kitchen? Do you know what steps to take if a CK participant is choking? In this workshop you will gain knowledge & basic first aid skills needed in the first few minutes following an emergency in the kitchen. This course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn basic life saving skills, but does not require formal ‘certification’. Training focuses on the basic skills needed in the first few minutes following an emergency, provides advice on when to seek medical attention & includes practice scenarios.

The Grandview Woodlands Food Connection is a grassroots food security group supporting residents to access healthy and affordable food. We are developing a number of community based food initiatives, including community gardening, bulk buying groups, school gardens, canning workshops,community kitchens and more and are looking for individuals interested in hands-on project coordination. 2. KIWASSA NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE’S FOOD PROGRAM
We are looking for volunteers to assist in food preparation, cooking and serving as well as cleaning and organizing the kitchen and other tasks as necessary. The food program serves healthy and nutritious meals to our program participants and caters for various events that take place within the neighbourhood house. Upon completion of three months of commitment, additional training may be provided (Food Safe training, resume writing, interview skills etc). Immediate training will be provided through orientation, basic food skills, meal preparation, and exposure to various languages and culture.

We are looking for helpers to pack food orders for NOWBC’s on-line farmers market on THURSDAYS from 9am to noon. Enjoy hands on work with volumes of organic fruits and veggies? Happy lifting cartons of peaches? Revel in labeling 100 bins of local organic food going out to fill dinner tables? Come on out and help! Volunteer fruit pickers and pick leaders are needed to harvest extra fruit from backyard fruit trees and redistribute it to community groups. In the past 12 years we have picked more than 35, 000 pounds of fruit and redistributed it to community centres, neighbourhood houses, daycares and other community groups. Reduce food waste, feed people in your community, and strengthen Vancouver food security. A range of fun volunteer positions are available.

Is the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project’s new social enterprise. A portion of our fruit picked is made into fruit galettes and sold at farmer’s markets.
