The GWFC is pleased to partner in the second annual WIld Salmon Caravan - a celebration of the spirit of wild salmon through the arts and culture! The Wild Salmon Caravan will travel to hosting communities over a 5 day journey from the headwaters of the Fraser River at Mount Robson to the Salish Seas. 11. SUSTAINABLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH LEADERSHIP
SOYL empowers secondary students to build and steward food gardens on school grounds, run a market stand, cook and share healthy meals, develop and sell a value-added product, and visit local food organizations. Youth build personal, social, academic, and employment skills as they contribute to building healthy and resilient communitySOYL is currently seeking secondary school applicants for our seven week summer program based out of Van Tech and David Thompson schoolyard market gardens. Youth entering grades 8-12 in September 2016 are eligible to apply for the SOYL Crew. SOYL Crew takes place 4 days/week, July 11-August 16, 9am-4pm. The program runs from 9am to 4pm, Monday through Thursday. SOYL Crew members can also earn $600 and volunteer hours or Work Experience credit for 7 weeks of participation.

Households in the Metro Vancouver region generate about 190,000 tonnes of food waste every year. Over half of that, just over 100,000 tonnes, is food, liquid and dairy waste that could have been consumed. Reducing that waste is key to meeting Metro Vancouver’s waste diversion targets as well as our goal of a 10 per cent reduction in per capita waste by 2020.
Food waste adds about $700 a year to each household’s grocery bill, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Costs not factored into our research include inputs like the water, electricity, fertilizer, soil degradation and labour to produce the food as well as the fuel to transport that food to global markets.

Rain Water Harvesting and Drought Tolerant Gardening: Skilling Up For Life With Climate Change
This 2-day permaculture intensive with Kim Del Valle Garcia of the Nettle’s Guild will use a systems-wide lens to dig into the causes of our region’s drought. As a group, we will ask questions and discuss climate change on a global scale and zero in on to its effects on our local ecosystems. We will then use the practices and techniques found in permaculture to craft resilient landscapes that are insulated from the weather extremes of a changing climate.
The two days will cover rain water harvesting and soil building with a focus on urban environments. Hands-on activities include the construction of a rainwater harvesting system and a hugelkulture bed at Briarpatch Community Garden.

The Sharing Farm is a non-profit community organization that grows vegetables on donated city lands for the Richmond Food Bank and other community agencies. We are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working farm interns for May – August 2016.
The Sharing Farm is a unique community farm combining the practice of organic farming set within a framework of food justice and food security in the region. The four acre farm is situated within Richmond’s Terra Nova Rural Park.
Interns will have access to many different skill sets, including greenhouse cultivation, beekeeping, market gardening, composting, farm machinery use, and more. Interns will gain valuable skills in multiple aspects of organic farming, as well as running a farmers’ market stand and a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program.
The Sharing Farm is located at the west end of Westminster Highway, alongside the West Dyke, in Richmond BC. It is accessible by bus, skytrain, car, or bicycle. It is about a ten minute walk from the nearest bus stop.

Duties and Responsibilities:
-Assist with field preparation, field maintenance, crop development, crop harvest, and post harvest handling
-Keep records and a farm journal
-Work alongside and help supervise volunteers
-Assist with educational programs, tours, special events and fund-raising activities
-Assist with the transportation and distribution of vegetables
-Keep farm and storage areas organized and tidy
-Assist running a CSA program
-Report to the Field Manager.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS (Service Canada):

— The ideal candidates will have a strong interest in organic farming and an interest in continuing in this field.
Salary: $12 per hour + benefits
35 hour work week, must be available weekends.
Approx. 14 weeks depending on final HRDC Canada SummerJobs approval of grant application.
