4. BRITANNIA COMMUNITY KITCHEN
Community Kitchen participants come together every few weeks to cook and eat nutritious meals together and to take meals home to their families. Community kitchens provide a fun and supportive environment to meet new people and try new things and they can also save money on groceries.
The Britannia Community Kitchen project will feature diabetic friendly cooking designed to meet the needs of individuals with diabetes or at risk of diabetes. Each 11 week session will include a presentation by a health professional familiar with nutrition and diabetes prevention. Come out and have some fun! These kitchens are fully subsidized and open to individuals who are struggling financially. Donations are accepted. Registration for childminding is separate. Space is limited.

Britannia Community Centre and the Grandview Woodland Food Connection are pleased to host the Journey to Wellness workshop series with its focus on healthy and affordable workshops (subsidies also available). All workshops will be held at Britannia Community Centre.
Sasha Laing is a Wellness Coach incorporating the Living Food Lifestyle. Her journey began through her need to eat more consciously and ethically, for the sake of her body and our planet. As a former dancer working with such world famous artists as Gregory Hines, she has extensive experience in nutrition related to sports, sports injuries and eating for optimal health and performance. She has studied nutrition with the likes of David Wolfe, Daniel Vitalis, Victoria Boutenko, Janice Skoreyko, Gabrielle Brick, Alissa Cohen and Tim Van Orden. Sasha is currently incorporating her knowledge in Herbalism and Raw Foods to aid stage two diabetics in reversing their diagnosis.

We are in the first part of public engagement for the Food Strategy and keeping in tune with our mantra “Talk Food With Us” we have been going to various events around town talking about food with Vancouverites: where they get it from, if they grow it, how they prepare it, dispose of it, etc. as well as identifying where great food destinations are in their neighbourhoods or “food assets” and what is missing from their neighbourhood food system “food gaps”, and on…Check out our blog to read about some of the events we’ve already been to.
But we can’t talk food with Vancouver alone and know that conversations and stories about food are everywhere, everyday. That’s why we’re looking for Volunteer Community Food Animators who will bring food conversations alive throughout the city and help inform the food strategy.
The goals of Community Food Animation however go beyond informing policy, and being an animator doesn’t require you to be a policy person at all. The only requirements are that you have passion, interest, and as much extra time as you’re willing to commit.
We would love to hear from you if you think you might! There will be periodic orientation sessions and an animation toolkit available with activities and tips for engagement to get you up and animating.

2. COMMUNITY GARDEN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
The City of Vancouver is asking residents to send in expressions of interest to help identify potential new community garden sites. For instance, a potential site could be vacant land at the end of a block, land parallel to streets, areas of park, etc. The list of potential community garden sites will help prioritize community garden support for upcoming years.

3. BRITANNIA BULK BUYING
Are you interested in fresh fruits and veggies? Do you want to save money? The Britannia Bulk Buying Group purchases fresh produce at wholesale prices saving you about 30% on your food bill. Food is bought once a month and brought to Britannia Community Centre to sort and pick up. Cost is $13 for about 7- 8 varieties of food. That is two bags of food. This program is for individuals and households who are struggling financially.

With support from Vancouver Coastal Health’s Aboriginal Strategic Health Initiatives Program (AHIP), we are pleased to announce an Aboriginal Community Kitchen Leadership Workshop. A community kitchen is a group of people who get together regularly to cook and eat together or cook and bring food home. Groups most often cook in community centers, neighbourhood houses, apartment building or hotel common rooms, schools, housing co- ops or people’s homes. In this workshop, you’ll find out more about community kitchens, learn different ways a group can work together and learn how you can lead or start a community kitchen. Experience a community kitchen first hand!
Participants registering for this workshop, must meet the following criteria: Live or work in the Vancouver Coastal Health Region; and, Be associated with an Aboriginal program (such as the Aboriginal Strategic Health Initiatives Program)

Mileage will be reimbursed for those using their vehicles. Volunteers must be able to work well with people and be physically able to lift 20-25 lb grocery bags. The General Manager of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society (GVFBS) is a newly created executive position responsible for overseeing the operations of the organization, managing the employees, assigning resources, coordinating the efforts of volunteers, executing the objectives of the strategic plan, and tracking progress against the budget. The incumbent functions within a strategic and policy framework established by the CEO and the Board and contributes to the organizational strategy, policy development and budget creation. Internally focused, and reporting directly to the CEO, the GM provides direction and structure for program areas and develops, implements and monitors programs to ensure achievement of organizational goals consistent with the mission of the GVFBS.
The ideal candidate has provided general management and operational oversight within a multi-faceted and complex organization, preferably with some exposure to the not-for-profit sector. As the right hand person to the CEO, the GM will possess exceptional leadership characteristics and knowledge of all functional areas within a business operation including finance, information technology, human resources, administration, planning and logistics. Outstanding communication, mentoring and overall interpersonal skills combined with personal values of compassion, integrity and social service are required.
